What is the truck driver clearinghouse?

As a Texas driver, you may be used to driving alongside giant tractor trailers, as they navigate the roadways throughout the state. Sharing the road with these massive vehicles can be intimidating. However, you may not think twice about the devastating consequences of becoming involved in an incident with a commercial truck. Although you may believe that the driver operating the tractor trailer is fully qualified to do so, there are truckers on the road that may not be. A shortage of truck drivers has some trucking companies stretching to find licensed truckers, and some companies may overlook truck driver records, including drinking violations. All of these oversights could lead to a tragic collision.

The Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, operated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, is designed to share information regarding truck driver violations among truck driver companies. Any drug and alcohol violations are reported to the clearinghouse by substance abuse professionals, medical review officers and trucking companies regulated by the FMCSA. Before putting truckers on the road, employers must check the clearinghouse to ensure truck drivers do not have any current violations. Drivers licensing agencies must also run a check before they renew or issue a commercial driver’s license.

This system was created to keep truck drivers with driving violations from going from one trucking company to another and minimize crashes caused by drunk truck drivers. Previously, there was no way for companies and agencies to share this information.
