Teen driver-involved crashes spike during “100 deadliest days”

As the seasons change across Texas and high school students wrap up classes for the year, they increasingly take to the state’s roadways, and as the number of teen drivers on the roads increases, so, too, does the number of teen driver-involved car wrecks. At the Law Office of Michael De La Paz, we recognize that teen-involved car crashes spike considerably during the time period known as the “100 deadliest days,” and we have assisted many clients who suffered injuries or lost loved ones in teen driver-involved car crashes pursue appropriate recourse.

According to AAA, the “100 deadliest days” refers to the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when most teen drivers are not in school and, as a result, more likely to be on the roads. While teen drivers pose a threat to other motorists year-round simply because they lack experience, teen drivers can prove to be even more hazardous during this time period, as they may be more likely to drive at night, drink and drive and so on.

Just how dangerous is it to be on the road during summer’s 100 deadliest days? During this period in 2016, for example, more than 1,050 people lost their lives in car crashes involving teen drivers. Additionally, 10 people lost their lives every day during the 100 deadliest days in 2016, which is a 14-percent increase over average highway fatality rates.

Teens who drive at night, or teens who speed behind the wheel, further contribute to your crash risk during summer’s 100 deadliest days. Nighttime car wrecks involving teen drivers typically jump about 22 percent during summer’s 100 deadliest days, and nearly 30 percent of all road fatalities involving teen drivers during this time period involve speeding.
