Drowsy drivers could be placing you at risk for accidents

Any drive down the interstate will reveal the various risks that drivers face every day. From distracted drivers to poor road conditions to speeding motorists, there are multiple things that could lead to an increased chance of a car accident. What you may not notice is that you are also probably sharing the road with drowsy drivers.

Drowsy driving can be incredibly dangerous, but many people do not realize how risky it is to get behind the wheel while overly tired. You may not be able to look at a person and tell if he or she is drowsy, but behind the wheel, one may be prone to swerve and display other risky behaviors. Texas drivers are responsible for knowing when they are too tired to get behind the wheel and drive safely.

A common, dangerous problem

Drowsy driving may be a more common problem than you think. In fact, it is a serious enough concern for major automaker Chevy to dedicate significant resources and manpower to learn more about drowsy driving and its effects on drivers. According to AAA, drowsy driving is a type of impaired driving -- like distracted driving and drunk driving.

While most people fail to see the dangers in getting behind the wheel while tired, it is a significant risk, and it may help to learn more about it in order to truly understand why it is a major safety concern. Consider the following:

  • Studies indicate that as many as 35 percent of drivers get less than the recommended amount of sleep each night.
  • Most drivers claim to understand they know drowsy driving is dangerous, but almost one-third of drivers polled admit to driving when they were so tired, they struggled to keep their eyes open.
  • Drivers must be able to recognize when they cannot safely drive, and they can engage safety systems, like lane departure warnings, to help avoid an accident.
  • Drivers can do things like listen to engaging programs or talk to someone to help them stay awake and keep their minds open.

If you suffered injuries in an accident, it is possible that a drowsy driver is to blame for what happened to you. As this is a type of impaired driving, you may have grounds to move forward with a civil claim in order to hold the liable parties accountable for what you suffered

Tired drivers are a threat to every motorist on the road. It is possible to secure appropriate compensation so that you will have what you need for a full and fair recovery.
