What is take-home toxic exposure?

If your Texas job requires you to work with or around toxic chemicals or materials, it may surprise you to learn that you are not the only one in your family who could develop symptoms of toxic exposure. Your family members could, too. As explained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, you can bring these toxins home on your shoes and clothing. Once there, they can build up on your furniture, your floors and other surfaces, and in the air your family breathes. Consequently, these toxins can harm your family, particularly your children.

The four most common toxins you can take home with you from work are the following:

  1. Lead
  2. Pesticides
  3. Asbestos fibers
  4. Beryllium

Danger to children

If you work as a painter, home or office renovator, or battery or electronics recycler, your risk of bringing home lead increases dramatically. As you likely already know, children are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning. It can damage their brains. It can likewise damage your unborn child if you or your spouse is pregnant.

Preventative measures

To lessen your risk of endangering your family with take-home toxic exposure, be sure to do the following:

  • Wear protective clothing at work so as to minimize the amount of toxins that contaminate your clothes.
  • Take a shower before leaving work. If your job site does not provide shower facilities, thoroughly wash your hands before going home.
  • Leave your work clothes and shoes at work if at all possible.
  • If you must wear your work clothes home, keep them separate from other family clothing. The same applies to your work shoes.
  • Change your clothes and shoes in your garage instead of in your house and keep them separate from your family’s other laundry.
