What is a whiplash injury?

If you hurt your neck or back in a Texas car crash, particular one in which another vehicle rear-ends yours, you likely will receive a whiplash injury. As Spine-Health.com explains, a whiplash injury occurs when the crash impact causes your head and neck to jerk back and forth, thereby injuring their tissues and nerves.

Even though most whiplash injuries, called cervical acceleration-deceleration syndrome (CAD) resolve on their own within three months’ time, many result in long-lasting or even lifetime discomfort, including the following:

  • Neck pain, often severe
  • Neck stiffness, often substantial
  • Reduced head and neck range of motion
  • Shoulder and/or upper back pain
  • Persistent headaches, often severe
  • Tingling, numbness or weakness in your shoulders or arms

Whiplash diagnosis

Physicians often have a difficult time diagnosing specific whiplash injuries because they can involve many parts of your body. For instance, you may sustain a fractured vertebra, a slipped disc or nerve damage. To help your doctor diagnose your precise injury, (s)he likely will do the following on your initial visit:

  • Obtain your complete medical history
  • Perform a complete physical examination
  • Take an x-ray of your neck and back
  • Order a CT scan
  • Order an MRI

Whiplash treatment

If you suffer a minor whiplash injury, your doctor may recommend rest, ice packs, heating pads and/or over-the-counter pain medications. (S)he may also place you in a cervical collar. If you sustain a more serious whiplash injury, however, you may require prescription medications, chiropractic spine manipulation, physical therapy, acupuncture, etc.
