WATER TUBING ACCIDENTS: RISKS AND SAFETY MEASURES

water-tubing-accidents.jpgUnderstanding the risks in water tubing accidents could mean the difference between having a wonderful time and suffering serious injury - or even death.

The excitement of water tubing draws many people during the summer months to Texas Rivers such as the Frio, Comal or Guadalupe rivers. Typically, people going water tubing simply have fun.

However, while fairly uncommon, every year you hear about a number of water tubing accidents that involve serious injuries or death. This can happen anywhere in the nation.

RECENT WATER TUBING ACCIDENTS

A recent accident on July 3, reported by The Oregonian, involved a 65-year old man from Las Vegas who was tubing with a group that launched their tubes near Amacher Park, OR. The man fell out of his tube when going through rapids and got sucked into a whirlpool. He had a life jacket with him, yet was not wearing it. Bystanders attempted to resuscitate him but were unsuccessful.

Another tragic tubing accident reported by CBS Colorado occurred in June this year when two teens were tubing on Colorado's Poudre River. One teen was 18 and the other was 16. Both were swept over a low-head dam, but the younger teen got stuck in the dam and a firefighter pulled him to safety. The other teen fell off his tube and rescue workers pulled him from the river further downstream. He was unconscious and they performed CPR, but he later passed away. Authorities said the river was too high and dangerous to be tubing under those conditions.
