DISTRACTED DRIVING CAUSED A SURGE IN TRAFFIC DEATHS

distracted-drivers1.png

Recent statistics indicate distracted driving has caused a surge in traffic deaths, despite other actions that had reduced traffic deaths for years.

The New York Times reported at the end of 2016 that the nation had seen the biggest spike in traffic deaths in 50 years. During the first six months of 2016, traffic deaths were 10.4 percent higher than they had been during the same time period in 2015.

WHAT ABOUT TECHNOLOGICAL MEASURES TO REDUCE DISTRACTED DRIVING?

While the auto industry had taken measures to incorporate mobile apps that allowed drivers to drive hands-free, more and more apps like Snapchat, Pokemon Go and others had flooded the market. All created more driving distractions and added to the mix of multi-tasking while driving.

Even though CarPlay allows drivers to use the iPhone's Siri to answer calls, dictate texts and keep the driver's eyes on the road, what about drivers' cognitive awareness of the road? Voice recognition systems may free their hands, but not their minds. The president of the National Safety Council (NSC) said, "It's the cognitive workload that's the problem."

DISTRACTED DRIVING THAT CAUSED TRAFFIC DEATHS OR SERIOUS INJURY

Examples include a Georgia 2015 lawsuit with evidence that shows a teenager drove over 100 miles per hour while using Snapchat, and her car crashed into an Uber driver who suffered serious injury.

An Oct. 26 2016 crash investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol showed that a teenager had recorded a Snapshot video of her driving at 115 miles per hour right before she crashed into another vehicle near Tampa and killed five people.
