fidget-spinners.png

A fidget spinner injury to a child in Houston has recently become a big news item. Fidget spinners have been a craze that's sweeping not just the U.S. but other countries as well. Some people say are they are the hottest toy on the market today. Fidget Spinner marketing claims they improve concentration for children with attention deficit disorder (ADD), anxiety and autism. The toy has ball bearings that make it spin when held between your fingers, and the spinning creates a pleasurable sensation.

A RECENT FIDGET SPINNER INJURY

According to the Dallas News, an east Texas mother had a frightening experience when her daughter started choking while sitting in the back seat of her car. She heard "an odd retching noise" coming from her daughter, Britton, who was drooling and whose face had turned red. The mother pulled over and her daughter explained she'd put part of the toy in her mouth to clean it but had swallowed it.

She took Britton to urgent care but the doctors couldn't decide whether the piece of toy had lodged in her airway or esophagus, so they called for an ambulance. The ambulance rushed her to Texas Children's Hospital in The Woodlands, north of Houston. X-rays showed a bushing had stuck in Britton's esophagus. Surgeons had to operate to remove it.

WAS THERE A FAILURE TO WARN?

On Learningexpress.com fidget spinner carries a warning of "CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts. Not for children under 3 years. A post on romper.com warns that parents should avoid fidget spinners for children under the age of 5.

Britton appeared to be older than 5, and in her Facebook post, Briton's mother warned that the bushings pop out easily and that not all spinners come with age appropriate warnings. She warned that for children under 8 years old they would pose a potential choking hazard.
