WHAT WAS WRONG WITH DEPUY HIP REPLACEMENTS?

depuy-new.png

DePuy hip replacements reached the market in 2005 despite the fact that no clinical trials preceded the FDA's approval of their release. Around 2008, complaints about the hip replacements started flooding in to the FDA. Recalling the product took DePuy more than a year and a half after the first hip replacement patient filed a lawsuit against the company. The finally recalled the product in 2010. One source says a study revealed that the hip replacement failed in one out of eight patients who had the hip replacement for five years.

The New York Times reported in an article published in 2013 that the device is one of the most flawed medical implants for several decades. It also reported that the DePuy Orthopedics Division of Johnson & Johnson evaluated in an internal 2011 document that the device would fail within five years in 40 percent of patients. Typically, hip implants made from plastic and metal last about 15 years. This DePuy hip implant consists of a metal ball and metal cup.

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THE DEPUY HIP REPLACEMENTS

Serious problems caused by the hip implant included:

  • Loosening components
  • Misalignment of components
  • Bone fracture
  • Hip dislocation

As the implant wears, metal fragments can release into the bloodstream causing bone staining, necrosis, swelling, tissue damage, muscle damage and nerve damage. Patients needed replacement surgeries and other medical treatment to deal with the problems.
