DEFECTIVE TIRES CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS ACCIDENTS

Defective tires can lead to serious accidents, injuries, and lawsuits. Consequently, millions of tires have been subject to recalls over the years. Sometimes manufacturers don't recall tires until serious accidents have already occurred. In other instances, they recall defective tires before accidents take place.

RECENT DEFECTIVE TIRES RECALLS

According to Consumer Affairs, Continental is notifying owners that it will replace defective tires free of charge as of February 10, 2017.

In December 2016, Pirelli announced the recall of All Season tires due to a defect that could cause the tires to develop cracks in the lower sidewall and result in air loss. These tires were part of original fittings for certain Maserati cars. The tire's reduced air pressure could lead to vehicle control loss and increased risk of crashes.

In September 2016, Goodyear recalled 16,757 Dunlop SP 50 tires. Tires being driven with low tire pressure could result in chunks of tread coming off and put drivers at risk for crashes.

THE MOST MAJOR TIRE RECALL TO DATE

The largest number of recalls to date occurred in 2001 when Ford recalled 6.5 million tires on millions of pickups and SUVs because the Bridgestone/Firestone tires disintegrated at high speeds.

WOMAN IN CORPUS CHRISTI CATASTROPHICALLY INJURED DUE TO DEFECTIVE TIRES

ABC News reported that a woman settled with Ford Motor Co. and Bridgestone/Firestone over a car crash that resulted in paralysis from the neck down.

She was a passenger in her friend's Ford Explorer. Her lawsuit alleged that treads on a Firestone tire separated, causing the vehicle to roll over. She sued for more than $100 million.

Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone argued that the tire was not responsible for the crash. Yet, they settled the case. Had the case gone to trial it would've been the first since the 6.5 million tires had been recalled.
