Chicago truck accidents in 2016 rank the highest in the nation along with a few other states. During the past five years, Illinois has had close to 600 truck accident fatalities. According to ABC Chicago, Illinois and a few other states account for more than 50% of all the nation’s truck fatalities.
FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE I-80
In August 2016 on the I-80, an accordion-like crash of four rigs resulted in three deaths. One of the trucking companies received a $25,000 fine for falsely reporting a trucker’s driving hours.
I-55 CHAIN REACTION TRUCKING ACCIDENT
This year Chicago saw one of its worst truck accidents. A chain reaction crash occurred on the I-55 that killed four people. According to NBC Chicago a tractor-trailer driver sped through a construction site and crashed into a car. This set off a chain reaction pile up.
The truck driver, Francisco Espinal-Quiroz was charged with falsifying his log book, which said he started work between 6 to 6:30 a.m. He actually started work around 2:30 a.m. He was also charged with speeding and was held on a $1 million bond. Other trucking industry violations were also noted.
In addition to the four who died, four other people suffered injuries and one was airlifted to a local hospital.
DANGEROUS STRETCH OF HIGHWAY FOR CHICAGO TRUCK ACCIDENTS
Moments after this crash occurred, a different truck driver died in a second accident about three miles away. During the past several years, the I-55 stretch where these two accidents occurred has also seen other accidents.
In fact, State Governor Pat Quinn vowed to look into the I-55 construction project based on four accidents occurring within a close period of time. He wanted the State Department of Transportation to accelerate the project as much as possible to improve safety.
